WP1 Plant Phylogeny: plant samples collection in Guadeloupe by J. Roncal and A. Rousteau

WP1 Plant Phylogeny: In the frame of SUBUTTEC, Julissa Roncal collected samples of species in the genus Sloanea in Guadeloupe with Ass. Pr. Alain Rousteau. Samples will be used towards the phylogenetic and biogeographic reconstruction of this genus of emergent tropical forest trees. Samples included herbarium specimens which were deposited at the Herbarium GUAD in INRAe Petit Bourg (Guadeloupe, FWI) with the help of V. Virapin, A.M. Toussaint and M. Umber. Collecting permits were granted by the government authorities to collect and store leaf samples in silica gel for DNA extraction.

A postdoc position has been offered to Natalia Ruiz Vargas (Univ. of Illinois in Chicago, USA) who will start in January 2025 until December 2026. Julissa, Natalia, and Toby Pennington from Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh will meet at the International Botanic Congress in Madrid in July 2024 to discuss the collaboration on the phylogenomics of the genus Sloanea. Sloanea samples and taxonomic expertise on the genus will be provided by Toby Pennington, Terrance Pennington and James Richardson.
